Q: What if I don’t speak Spanish?
A: ¿No habla Español? No problem! Our Guatemalan staff is fluent in English, and many of our interns are native speakers. Translators will be with you at all times helping you communicate seamlessly with the children and community members. Most hospitality workers, such as airport and restaurant employees, speak English as well.
Q: Can my kids visit with us?
A: Absolutely! The community children love meeting and playing with new friends, and it is a great way for your child to learn and appreciate a new culture. Our team coordinators will talk with you and help you determine, based on your child’s age and specific need,s what type of trip works best for your family.
Q: Should I be concerned about safety on the trip?
A: Regardless of where you travel, it is always smart to ask this question. We take your safety very seriously. Our guest house, Casa Sunamita, provides a beautiful and secure home base during your stay. Our private bus allows the group to travel together to the community and events. Although we have never encountered any issues, our staff stays current on safety and political issues and takes every precaution to err on the side of safety.
Q: Are there health concerns I should be aware of?
A: We recommend checking the CDC.gov website prior to your trip for updated health warnings, but generally, these do not effect Guatemala City. Because we are working and playing near the garbage dump, we do suggest making sure your tetanus vaccine is current. Our staff will provide you with plenty of fresh water for drinking, but you should avoid consuming tap water when brushing your teeth, or showering. We also recommend bringing with you any common over the counter medications you might need (Ibuprofen, Immodium, allergy, etc), along with your current prescriptions.
Q: Can I meet the child I sponsor?
A: YES! You will get to meet your child and their family, and have many opportunities to spend time with them.
